Press Info – WCCI 2016

A hybrid procedure in 3D and a special session with the Ministry of Health are the special attractions of the twentieth anniversary edition of the WCCI Warsaw Course on Cardiovascular Interventions

Warsaw will become the cardiology capital of Europe in April. The best specialists from all over the world will meet to exchange experiences on 6-8 April 2016, at the twentieth anniversary edition of the Warsaw Course on Cardiovascular Interventions (WCCI).

The directors of the WCCI Warsaw Course are: Professor Adam Witkowski, MD, Ph. D. – Head of the Department of Interventional Cardiology and Angiology at the Institute of Cardiology in Warsaw and Professor Robert Gil, MD, Ph. D. – Head of the Clinical Department of Interventional Cardiology of the Central Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Interior in Warsaw. WCCI is accredited by the Association of Cardiovascular Interventions of the Polish Cardiac Society (AISN PTK) and is the official conference of AISN PTK.

This year’s Course is unique not only because it is the anniversary edition. Besides the renowned specialists and planned sessions, the Organisers have prepared for the participants a special session with the Ministry of Health and the National Health Fund, and also, for the first time in Poland at a cardiology congress, a hybrid procedure recorded in 3D shall be presented.

“Plans for the development of transcatheter treatment of heart defects in Poland. Can we provide patients adequate access to these treatments?” is the theme of the special session, which will be attended byJarosław Pinkas, MD, Ph. D. Jarosław Pinkas – Secretary of State in the Polish Ministry of Health, a representative of the National Health Fund and outstanding professors. We will learn from the session, among others, how percutaneous treatment of aortic stenosis developed in Poland in the years 2008-2015, what are the plans for the development of transcatheter treatment of heart defects in Poland from the perspective of health policy, and what are the plans for the development of these modern and minimally invasive treatment methods of heart defects in Poland from the perspective of the payer.

The session will be held at 10-12 a.m., and it will be followed by questions from the audience, as well as questions from journalists, who we would like to warmly invite to this session.

Undoubtedly, a surprise and a great attraction of this year’s course will be the opportunity to watch during the innovative session a hybrid procedure in 3D. During WCCI, a special room with modern projectors to display the procedure in 3D will be opened, and participants will receive special glasses to watch hybrid coronary revascularization in a patient with multi-vessel coronary artery disease in this innovative way. The procedure was recorded at the Ministry of Interior hospital in Warsaw. The cardiac surgery part of the procedure was performed by Professor P. Suwalski, and the cardiology part by Professor R. Gil. The procedures were filmed several cameras, and thanks to a laparoscopically inserted 3D camera, it will be possible to follow the procedure also from inside the patient’s body. This innovative technology will be used for the first time in Poland, at WCCI.

An additional attraction and an opportunity for young doctors is the specially prepared Master Class for Young Practitioners, organised under the auspices of AISN, EAPCI and PCR. The course is dedicated to young doctors from Central and Eastern Europe, starting independent activity in the scope of percutaneous angioplasty of coronary arteries. Particular emphasis will be placed on the practical aspects of dealing with patients and the technical side of performing coronary angioplasty procedures. The training will take place on the basis of detailed analysis of selected clinical cases. The formula of the course encourages participants to discuss and exchange views on how to optimally proceed in a given clinical case. The course directors are: Professor Gabor Toth, Professor Jacek Legutko, Professor Jerzy Pręgowski. We invite young doctors to the Intercontinental Hotel on April 6. The number of places is limited, and you can sign up at wcci.pl.

The leading topics of this year’s edition are:
• percutaneous angioplasty in multi-vessel coronary artery disease
• the treatment of acute coronary syndromes
• hybrid procedures
• transcatheter treatment of valvular heart disease
• closure of the left atrial appendage and abnormal intracardiac connections
• advances in the percutaneous treatment of peripheral artery disease, with particular emphasis on carotid artery angioplasty.

Multimedia presentations, simultaneous conferences and interactive practical workshops are organised by the Foundation for the Support of Interventional Cardiology and held under the auspices of the Clinical Department of Interventional Cardiology of the Central Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Interior in Warsaw and the Department of Interventional Cardiology and Angiology at the Institute of Cardiology in Warsaw.
